East Rosebud Fly & Tackle Fishing Report- May 3 2024
Bighorn River
Current flow at the St. Xavier bridge, 6,200 cfs. Current water temperature, 42F.
Fishing is fair to good with the nymphing game. Best bet is long leaders fished deep with sow bugs and BWO patterns. Dry fly action is minimal with occasional midge and BWOs popping in the afternoons and evenings. The streamer game is slow with the colder water temps.
Dries: The Student (16&18), Adams (18), and Griffith gnat (18&20)
Nymphs: Ray Charles (gray & tan 14&16) and Shanafelt’s Carpet Bug (Tan or gray with red bead)
Streamers: black leech, Thin Mint, Kory's Grinch, black Gallup’s Dungeon.
Yellowstone River
Current flow at Livingston, 3,220 cfs. Current water temperature, 42 F.
River clarity is generally clear in the mornings progressing to off color as the temps warm throughout the day. Runoff conditions will likely begin with warmer days leading to muddy fishing conditions.
Fishing has been reported as fair to good. Nymphing and Streamer fishing has been the most productive. There’s been a few positive reports with March Brown dry fly success.
Dries: March Browns (14&16) and tan Caddis (14)
Nymphs: Pat’s Rubber Legs (brown, olive, black), Pheasant tail (16) and Prince (12-16)
Streamers: Sex Dungeon (yellow, olive or black)
Stillwater River
Current flow at Absarokee, 458 cfs. Current water temperature, 41 F..
Water clarity is mostly clear. Reports are that Dries, nymphing and the streamer bite are all producing. Tan Caddis are hatching making for some quality dry fly action.Thin Mint streamers are a good bet.
Dries: Tan elk hair Caddis (14)
Nymphs: Pat’s Rubber Legs (black) and Flexi Girdle Bug (Brown & Black)
Streamers: Thin Mint, Sex Dungeon (yellow), Articulated Sparkle Minnow, & Coffey’s Sparkle Minnow
Boulder River
Current flow at Big Timber, 324 cfs. River is clear and fishable!
Nymphs: Pat’s Rubber Legs (brown),Flexi Girdle Bug (Brown & Black), Golden Stone (8) Gold Ribbed Hare’s Ear, & Pheasant Tails.
Streamers: Kory's Grinch, Coffey’s Sparkle Minnow, Kreelex Streamer
Rock Creek
Current flow at Red Lodge, 37 cfs. Visibility is clear. Reports are that the fishing is good with streamers and nymphs.
Dries: tan elk hair Caddis
Nymphs: San Juan Worm (red), Pat’s Rubber Legs (black), Flexi Girdle Bug (Brown & Black), Girdle Bug (Brown & Black), Prince Nymph
Streamers: Kory's Grinch, Kreelex Streamer, Coffey’s Sparkle Minnow, Gallup’s Dungeon (black).
